Diamond Eternity Ring
How to choose the right diamond eternity ring for your style, fit and existing rings.
A diamond eternity ring features a continuous or partial row of diamonds around the band.
Traditionally associated with everlasting love, eternity rings can be given for an anniversary or milestone, worn as a wedding ring, added to an existing bridal stack or simply chosen as a diamond band.
Key Takeaways
Think About Resizing
Full eternity rings cannot normally be resized. Half and three-quarter designs provide greater flexibility if your finger size changes in the future.
Matching Matters
With diamonds sitting directly beside one another, consistency in size, proportions, colour and overall appearance is particularly important.
Consider Your Other Rings
If your eternity ring will sit alongside an engagement or wedding ring, consider their profiles and settings together to avoid unwanted gaps or rubbing.
Full, 3/4 or 1/2 Eternity
Full, Three-Quarter
or Half Eternity?
The amount of diamond coverage affects the ring's appearance, comfort, price and ability to be resized.

Full Eternity
Diamonds continue around the entire circumference, creating an uninterrupted line from every visible angle.
The main consideration is sizing. With no plain section of metal, a full eternity ring cannot normally be resized. If your finger size changes significantly, the ring will generally need to be remade.
Three-Quarter Eternity
Diamonds cover most of the band with a small plain section underneath.
This creates much of the appearance of a full eternity ring while retaining greater flexibility for future adjustment.
Half Eternity
Diamonds cover the visible upper portion of the ring with plain metal underneath.
It's generally the easiest to resize, practical for everyday wear and requires fewer diamonds than an equivalent full eternity ring.
Fergus James Expert Insight
If uninterrupted diamonds are your priority and you're confident in your ring size, full eternity can be beautiful.
If future resizing or practicality matters, we'd normally consider three-quarter or half eternity instead.
Diamonds
Natural or
Lab-Grown Diamonds?
Fergus James offers both without preference towards either.
Natural
Chosen for their natural origin and rarity.
Our natural eternity rings normally use:
G–H Colour · VS to carefully selected SI Clarity+
Lab-Grown
Lab-grown diamonds have the same fundamental crystal structure and physical properties as natural diamonds but differ in origin, relative rarity and price.
Our lab-grown eternity rings normally use:
E–F Colour · VS Clarity+
Lab-grown can allow you to choose larger individual diamonds or greater diamond coverage within the same budget.
Shape
Choosing Your
Diamond Shape
Fergus James eternity rings are available across ten diamond shapes:
Round · Oval · Pear · Marquise · Emerald · Asscher · Heart · Princess · Cushion · Radiant
Round
The classic choice for strong sparkle and a balanced, continuous appearance.
Oval, Pear & Marquise
Elongated proportions provide greater visual coverage and create a more distinctive silhouette.
Emerald & Asscher
Step-cut faceting creates broad flashes of light and clean geometry rather than brilliant-style sparkle.
Radiant, Princess & Cushion
Square or rectangular silhouettes with greater brilliance, ranging from the sharper Princess to the softer Cushion.
Heart
A distinctive and romantic option where consistent shape and proportions across the diamonds become particularly important.
From Our Experience…
Fancy shapes naturally vary more from diamond to diamond than Round Brilliants.
For shapes such as Oval, Pear, Emerald and Heart, we'd pay particular attention to matching the outlines and proportions so the finished ring looks balanced.
Understanding Diamond Size & Carat Weight
Carat measures diamond weight.
On an eternity ring, CTW or TCW means total carat weight — the combined weight of every diamond in the ring.
The finished total depends on:
Individual diamond size · Number of diamonds · Ring size · Diamond shape · Coverage · Setting
A larger finger may require more diamonds to achieve the same coverage.
Two eternity rings with the same total carat weight can therefore look noticeably different.
Fergus James Expert Insight
We'd look at individual diamond size and dimensions alongside total carat weight.
Carat weight is useful for comparison, but it doesn't tell you exactly how substantial the finished ring will look.
How Important Are the 4Cs?
The 4Cs still matter, but we'd approach them differently from a large engagement-ring centre diamond.
An eternity ring contains multiple smaller diamonds sitting directly beside one another, making consistency and overall appearance particularly important.
We'd rather use diamonds that look bright, clean and beautifully matched than charge for unnecessarily high grades that create little visible difference.
That's why we typically use:
Natural → G–H colour · VS to selected SI clarity+
Lab-grown → E–F colour · VS clarity+

Why Diamond
Matching Matters
Because eternity-ring diamonds sit immediately beside one another, inconsistencies can be surprisingly noticeable.
Every Fergus James eternity ring uses hand-selected diamonds matched for:
Size · Dimensions · Shape · Proportions · Colour · Clarity · Overall appearance
They don't need mathematically identical specifications.
From Our Experience…
What matters is that the finished ring looks consistent as one piece.
This becomes especially important with fancy shapes, where individual diamonds can vary noticeably despite having similar specifications on paper.
Choosing Your Setting
The setting influences appearance, comfort, security and how the eternity ring interacts with neighbouring rings.
Shared-Prong
Neighbouring diamonds share prongs, reducing visible metal and creating a continuous line of diamonds.
Four-Prong
Each diamond is secured by four points of contact, creating a structured appearance suitable for various shapes.
Channel
Diamonds sit between continuous edges of metal for a clean appearance with additional protection.
Bezel
A fine border of metal surrounds each diamond, creating a smooth, contemporary design.
U-Shaped
Open sections beneath and between the diamonds allow more of their sides to remain visible.
Fergus James Expert Insight
We wouldn't choose a setting based purely on its technical name.
We'd consider the diamond shape, appearance, comfort, security and what will be worn beside it.
Stacking
Wearing an Eternity Ring
With Your Engagement Ring
There are no fixed rules
An eternity ring can be worn:
As a wedding ring · Beside an engagement ring · As part of a larger stack · On another hand · On its own
Traditionally, the wedding ring is worn closest to the hand, followed by the engagement ring and then the eternity ring — but this is convention rather than a requirement.
Will They Sit Flush?
Not necessarily.
The height and shape of the settings determine whether the rings can sit directly alongside one another.
A low engagement-ring basket or unusual setting can create a visible gap.
More importantly, poorly matched settings can rub against one another over time.
From Our Experience…
If you're buying an eternity ring for an existing stack, we'd consider the rings together rather than choosing the eternity ring in isolation.
Bring your existing ring to our Dubai showroom and our specialists can compare the profiles and recommend designs that work alongside it.
Sizing
Choosing the
Correct Ring Size
Correct sizing is particularly important with a full eternity ring because it cannot normally be resized.
Whenever possible, we'd recommend having your finger professionally measured before ordering.
Fergus James provides complimentary ring-sizing consultations at our Dubai showroom.
Finger size can change slightly with temperature and throughout the day, so the ring should feel secure without being uncomfortably tight.
If you're between sizes or buying as a surprise, speak with our team rather than guessing — particularly for a full eternity design.
Certification
Are Eternity-Ring
Diamonds Certified?
Eternity rings often contain numerous smaller diamonds, so individually grading every stone isn't always practical or useful.
At Fergus James:
Individual diamonds 0.30ct+ → individual grading reports provided
Individual diamonds below 0.30ct → not individually certified as standard
A jewellery report for the completed piece can also be arranged on request.
Fergus James Expert Insight
When individual diamonds aren't certified, the jeweller's selection, matching and quality control become particularly important.
A certificate describes an individual diamond. It doesn't tell you whether dozens of diamonds have been well matched into a beautiful finished ring.
Aftercare
Ready-to-Order
or Bespoke?
Fergus James keeps a selection of bestselling eternity rings in stock and ready to order.
Our collection includes different diamond shapes, sizes and designs.
If you're looking for a particular combination — or need the eternity ring to work around an existing engagement ring — we can create a design around your requirements.
Custom eternity rings normally take approximately 7–14 days to produce, with fast-tracking often available for important dates.
How to Choose the Right Eternity Ring
When comparing your options, we'd focus on:
- Full, three-quarter or half coverage
- Diamond shape
- Individual diamond size
- Natural or lab-grown
- Diamond matching
- Ring size and future resizing
- How it sits alongside existing rings
- Setting and comfort
- 18k gold colour
- Warranty and aftercare
Fergus James Expert Insight
If you'll wear the eternity ring alongside an engagement or wedding ring, we'd start with those rings too.
How the pieces sit and wear together can be just as important as how the eternity ring looks on its own.
Frequently Asked Questions
The continuous circle of diamonds traditionally symbolises everlasting love and commitment, which is why eternity rings are associated with anniversaries and relationship milestones.
There's no specific anniversary. Eternity rings can be given for any anniversary, the birth of a child, a wedding or another important milestone.
Yes. An eternity ring can replace a traditional plain wedding band.
If it will sit alongside an engagement ring, consider whether their profiles work comfortably together.
Normally, no. Because the diamonds and settings continue around the entire band, significant size changes generally require the ring to be remade.
Half and three-quarter eternity rings provide greater resizing flexibility.
A full eternity provides uninterrupted diamonds from every angle.
A half eternity leaves plain metal underneath, making it generally easier to resize, more practical and less expensive for an equivalent diamond size and quality.
CTW means carat total weight — the combined weight of all diamonds in the ring.
Yes. The important consideration is whether their profiles and settings sit comfortably together without unwanted gaps or rubbing.
Traditionally:
Wedding ring → Engagement ring → Eternity ring
But there's no requirement to follow this order. Wear them in whichever arrangement looks and feels best.
