One of the biggest mistakes buyers make is starting with the diamond. Before looking at specifications, think about the person who'll wear the ring every day.
If it's a surprise, look for clues:

yellow gold, white metals or rose gold? Minimal or statement pieces?
Their personal style
classic, contemporary, vintage or trend-led?
Their lifestyle
an active or hands-on lifestyle may suit a lower-profile or more protective setting.

You don't need the highest grades available to choose a beautiful diamond. The key is understanding how cut, colour, clarity and carat work together.
Cut
If we could give just one piece of diamond advice, it would be this: don't compromise on cut. Cut has a major influence on a diamond's overall appearance and sparkle. Fergus James only offers diamonds with Excellent or Ideal cut quality.
Colour
Diamond colour runs from D (colourless) down the grading scale. Higher grades are rarer, but neighbouring grades can look extremely similar once set. The right choice depends on whether you prioritise rarity, appearance or value.
Clarity
Higher clarity grades such as VVS and IF are exceptionally rare, but many lower grades can still appear completely clean to the naked eye. The goal is to understand what you'll actually see rather than simply paying for a higher grade on paper.
Carat
Carat measures weight, not visible size. Two diamonds of the same carat weight can look noticeably different depending on their shape, proportions and cut.

For most clients, we'd rather put budget into characteristics that create a visible difference than into grades they won't appreciate without magnification.
As a general starting point, we typically recommend:
- Natural diamonds: G/H colour and VS/SI or higher clarity
- Lab-grown diamonds: E/F colour and VS or higher clarity

Natural Diamonds
Natural diamonds formed within the Earth over geological timescales and may appeal if natural origin and rarity matter most.
Lab-Grown Diamonds
Lab-grown diamonds are created using technology that reproduces diamond growth in a controlled environment. They can allow you to maximise size or specifications within a given budget.

A cathedral setting has shoulders that rise towards the diamond, lifting it slightly higher for extra presence. A basket setting supports the diamond from beneath and usually sits lower on the finger, making it a practical option for everyday wear and active lifestyles.
Think About the Wedding Band Now
Even if the wedding feels a long way off, it's worth considering how the engagement ring will eventually sit alongside a wedding band. Some settings naturally sit flush with a straight band. Others may require a curved or contoured wedding band to follow the shape of the engagement ring. It shouldn't determine your choice, but it's worth planning for from the beginning.
