Focus on Cut
For round diamonds always try and go for an Excellent cut diamond – excellent cut means more sparkle which is what diamonds are all about.
Colour is less important
Colour is not so important for round diamonds as the natural brilliance of the round cut diamond disguises lower colour shades – for halo settings go for i or better – for solitaire a nice J/K colour still looks amazing..

ROUND CUT ENGAGEMENT RINGS
Round cut diamond shape is, without dispute, the most popular shape in the history of diamond rings. The Fergus James collection pays homage to the round shapes historical significance. Because round shaped diamonds are the most popular shape customers have the largest selection, of any diamond shape, to choose from. Round shaped diamonds are popular with the general public but this shape is not a common shape for celebrities. There is no specific reason for this, however, fancy shapes tend to become more beautiful with size, whereas after the 4 carat diamond size a round diamond does not look quite as elegant as other larger fancy shapes. For example a 5ct oval shaped diamond ring, and a 5ct emerald shaped diamond, look more refined than a 5ct round shaped diamond. One exception to this was Natalie Portman who sports a stunning, but relatively modest, 2.5 ct diamond set into a lovely antique style ring design. The is no doubt though that Natalie is the exception to the general rule that when celebrities are buying large diamonds they prefer emerald shaped diamonds, oval shaped diamonds, pear shaped diamonds and cushion shaped diamonds. But for diamond sizes that are within the price range of most people, the round cut diamond shape is an amazing choice because the round cut diamond holds more fire, brilliance and luster than any other diamond shape. Because diamonds are cut to sparkle this is a pretty significant factor.
