Why Dubai
Why Do UK Customers Buy

Buying through Fergus James gives UK customers access to:
- Natural and lab-grown diamonds
- GIA and IGI certification
- Competitive Dubai pricing
- A dedicated diamond specialist
- Complimentary bespoke design

- Unlimited complimentary CAD revisions
- Jewellery handcrafted in Dubai
- Fast production

Fergus James does not charge an additional bespoke-design fee. Customers can adapt an existing design or create an entirely original ring while working within their chosen budget.
Pricing & Taxes
Can Buying an Engagement Ring
From Dubai Save Money?
It can, although customers should always compare complete rings on a like-for-like basis.
Diamond prices depend on:
- Natural or lab-grown origin
- Carat weight
- Shape
- Cut and visual performance
- Colour
- Clarity
- Certification
- Millimetre dimensions
- Fluorescence
- International availability
The setting price also depends on its gold or platinum weight, construction, side diamonds, design complexity and craftsmanship.
Dubai's position within the international diamond trade allows Fergus James to compare suitable diamonds across an extensive supply network. Fergus James also avoids the substantial brand premiums associated with some international luxury houses.
However, the cheapest quotation does not necessarily represent the best value. Two rings that appear similar online can differ substantially in:
- Diamond cut and sparkle
- Milkiness or unwanted tint
- Visible inclusions
- Certification
- Face-up measurements
- Gold purity and weight
- Band thickness
- Setting construction
- Manufacturing quality
- Warranty and aftercare
Fergus James is not positioned as the cheapest possible jeweller. The focus is on selecting an excellent-looking diamond, producing a high-quality ring and supporting the customer after the purchase.
Pricing & Taxes
Will I Pay UK VAT or Customs Duty?
Jewellery sent from Dubai to the UK passes through UK customs.
Import VAT and customs duty may apply depending on the ring's value, product classification, materials and destination within the UK. Import VAT is normally charged at the applicable UK VAT rate, while the customs-duty rate depends on the type and origin of the goods.
Great Britain and Northern Ireland can also have different customs procedures.
Fergus James explains the expected shipping costs, taxes and duties within the customer's quotation so the anticipated delivered price is understood before the order is confirmed. The team also supplies the required commercial invoice, product information and shipping documentation.
The quotation should confirm whether the estimated import charges are included or whether any amount may be collected by the courier before delivery. Customers will not be intentionally left with undisclosed shipping charges.
Final customs assessments remain subject to the applicable UK rules. Current guidance is available through the UK Government's tax and customs information for goods sent from abroad.
Process
How Does the Remote Bespoke Process Work?
The complete engagement-ring process can be managed from the United Kingdom.
Step 1
Share Your Requirements
Customers can begin through:
- Video consultation
- Website enquiry
- Upload Your Dream Design
Useful information includes:
- Reference images
- Preferred ring style
- Natural or lab-grown preference
- Diamond shape and approximate size
- Metal colour
- Ring size
- Budget
- Engraving
- Proposal date or delivery deadline
It is not necessary to know every detail. A Fergus James specialist can explain the available options and help develop the design.
Step 2
Complimentary Consultation
The initial consultation is complimentary.
Your diamond specialist will discuss the ring, budget and diamond requirements. Fergus James offers both natural and lab-grown diamonds and does not pressure customers towards either option.
The objective is to identify the best-looking diamond and strongest overall ring within the selected budget.
Step 3
Compare Suitable Diamonds
Fergus James searches its international diamond supply and recommends appropriate options.
UK customers can receive:
- HD diamond videos
- Side-by-side comparisons
- Diamond measurements
- Grading-report copies
- Explanations of colour, clarity and cut
- A personal recommendation from the diamond specialist
Every diamond is assessed individually rather than being selected from its certificate grades alone.
A diamond may be rejected for:
- Milkiness or haziness
- Brown, green, grey or blue nuance
- Visible or distracting inclusions
- Poor proportions
- Weak face-up measurements
- Reduced sparkle
- An unattractive bow tie
- Durability concerns
Step 4
Complete Quotation
The customer receives a complete quotation based on the chosen diamond and ring design.
The quotation can include:
- Centre diamond
- Side diamonds or gemstones
- Gold or platinum setting
- CAD design
- Bespoke production
- Engraving
- Certification
- Delivery
- Expected destination charges
A 20% deposit secures the selected diamond and begins the CAD-design process. The remaining 80% is paid before the ring is dispatched or when collecting it in Dubai.
Payments can be arranged in GBP, subject to the exchange rate and payment method confirmed in the quotation.
Step 5
CAD Design & Approval
A detailed CAD design is created before production.
The customer can review:
- Multiple viewing angles
- Ring dimensions
- Band width
- Setting height
- Prong position
- Diamond placement
- Metal colour
- Engraving
- Overall proportions
Unlimited complimentary revisions are included. Production begins only after the customer approves the final design.
Changes may be possible until the ring has been cast. Requests made after casting may create additional costs or delays.
Step 6
Production in Dubai
Every Fergus James ring is handcrafted in the company's Dubai workshop.
Production normally takes approximately 7–14 days after the diamond and final CAD design have been approved. Complimentary fast-tracking may be available when the required materials and workshop capacity allow.
After production, the ring undergoes quality control and the diamond specialist sends the customer a real-life video of the finished piece.
Step 7
Fully Insured Delivery to the UK
The finished ring is sent to the United Kingdom using fully insured international DHL Express delivery. Fergus James remains responsible for the shipment until it reaches the customer's specified address, with tracking information provided after dispatch.
The courier may request identification, address confirmation or customs-clearance information from the recipient. Customers should provide any requested details promptly to prevent avoidable delays.
The complete design-to-delivery process can often be completed within approximately two to three weeks, although timing depends on diamond availability, CAD approval, production and customs clearance.
Certification
Are Fergus James Diamonds Independently Certified?
Fergus James normally provides:
- A GIA grading report for individual natural diamonds of 0.30ct or more
- An IGI grading report for individual lab-grown diamonds of 0.30ct or more
- An IGI report for qualifying coloured gemstones of 0.30ct or more
- An optional IGI jewellery report for eligible completed pieces
- Clear disclosure of any certification exceptions
The grading report is sent to the customer before the diamond is confirmed. Customers can independently verify the report number through the official GIA or IGI website.
Certified diamonds of 0.30ct or more are normally laser-inscribed with their report number. Fergus James checks the inscription against the report during its receiving and quality-control procedures.
The original grading report is supplied with the finished jewellery.
Diamonds
Natural or Lab-Grown: Which Should I Choose?
Natural and lab-grown diamonds have essentially the same chemical, physical and optical properties. Their main differences are origin, rarity, availability and price.
Natural diamonds are often chosen for their geological formation, rarity, history and tradition.
Lab-grown diamonds are frequently chosen because they allow customers to purchase a larger diamond or higher specifications for a substantially lower initial cost.
Approximately 80% of current Fergus James engagement-ring customers choose lab-grown diamonds. However, both options are available and Fergus James does not pressure customers towards either origin.
Natural and lab-grown diamond rings receive the same craftsmanship, quality control, lifetime warranty and aftercare.
Sizing
How Can I Confirm a Ring Size Secretly?
Fergus James can help estimate a partner's ring size using:
- A photograph of their hand
- Height and approximate build
- An existing ring
- A photograph of a ring beside a ruler
- Guidance from friends or family
- Fergus James's internal sizing process
If using an existing ring, customers should explain which finger and hand it is worn on.
An estimated proposal size does not always have to be exact. Eligible rings can be resized after the proposal.
AfterCare
Is Resizing and Aftercare Available in the UK?
Yes. Fergus James works with a trusted independent aftercare partner in London that can assist with eligible resizing, manufacturing defects and selected aftercare services.
The London location is an aftercare partner rather than a Fergus James retail store. It gives UK customers access to local support without routinely returning their ring to Dubai.
One complimentary initial resize is available for eligible rings, subject to the ring's design and the applicable terms. Full eternity rings generally cannot be resized conventionally and may need to be remade.
Customers should contact Fergus James before taking the jewellery to any workshop. Unauthorised work by another jeweller may affect the lifetime warranty.
Warranty
What Does the Lifetime Warranty Cover?
Eligible Fergus James jewellery includes a lifetime warranty covering manufacturing and workmanship defects.
Aftercare may include:
- Professional cleaning
- Setting inspection
- Prong inspection and re-tipping
- Rhodium replating for white gold
- Eligible resizing
- Maintenance
- Repairs relating to covered manufacturing defects
The lifetime warranty does not normally cover:
- Loss or theft
- Accidental impact or damage
- Misuse
- Normal wear and tear
- Work completed by an unauthorised jeweller
- Loss of a centre diamond caused by accidental damage
Customers should add valuable jewellery to an appropriate home-contents or specialist jewellery-insurance policy. A complimentary insurance valuation can be supplied upon request.
Returns
Can UK Orders Be Returned?
Fergus James offers a 30-day returns policy, subject to the conditions stated in the current returns policy.
Customers should review the policy before ordering, particularly for personalised, engraved, resized or bespoke jewellery. The diamond specialist can explain how the policy applies to the proposed ring before the deposit is paid.
If a return is accepted, the treatment of import VAT or customs duty is handled separately under the relevant UK refund procedures. Customers may need to submit evidence that the jewellery was returned to the sender.
Visit
Can I Collect My Ring in Dubai?
Yes. UK customers can choose between insured delivery and personal collection from the Fergus James Dubai showroom.
The showroom is located at:
Fergus James
Office 3107, Floor 31
Mazaya Business Avenue, Tower AA1
Jumeirah Lakes Towers
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Appointments allow customers to:
- Compare diamond shapes and sizes
- View loose lab-grown diamonds
- Review sourced natural diamonds
- Try different ring styles
- Discuss a bespoke design
- Confirm ring size
- Collect a completed order
Eligible tourists collecting their jewellery in Dubai may be able to use the UAE Tourist Refund Scheme. The purchase must be correctly registered, and the customer must personally export the jewellery and complete the required departure validation.
Customers carrying valuable jewellery into the UK should retain the invoice and certification and comply with UK declaration, VAT and customs requirements. Collecting the ring personally does not automatically remove UK import obligations.
